2/6/10 Eric Avery in the studio
With the Jane's Addiction Australia tour a mere two weeks away, Eric Avery is going into the studio. He has been working through the last year on a second solo album. i am assuming the studio work he is doing is also solo work. His last album was great. Considering recent news about the possibility that he is leaving, i can only think some of these solo tracks might have been rejected Jane's Addiction tracks when they were in the studio with Trent Reznor. total speculation on my part.

2/4/10 Perry Farrell talks, new member, new song
In an article posted today, Perry Farrell says a new member is "very likely" for Jane's Addiction. He also revealed that Duff Mckagan is writing with the 3 original members and they have "one great song so far called 'top dog'. a song title that sounds less like jane's addiction, and more like perry farrell's satellite party. i will say the title is completely appropriate considering the author.
It would make sense in that McKagan is a longtime friend of the band, dating back to the Jane's and Guns N' Roses rivalry when the two ruled L.A. in the late '80s, and has since played with Navarro in L.A. covers supergroup Camp Freddy several times. Still, Farrell is not ready to confirm or even call this "mystery bassist" an official part of Jane's. Asked if there would be a new member, he would only say it's "very likely."
Farrell did reveal that the bassist is writing with the original trio, and that songs for the first new album under the Jane's moniker since 2003's 'Strays' are starting to come together. "We've got one great song so far called 'Top Dog,'" he says.
It's obviously early in the process, but fans will be able to get some new Jane's music soon, sort of. "We're putting together a remix of 'Superhero,' the 'Entourage' theme," he says, adding that Steve Porter will be doing the remix. "We figure that ought to be a fat track for clubs."

1/23/10 Duff Mckagan joining Jane's Addiction

wow, so it's been an active 3 days or so. duff mckagan might be the mysterious writing partner/bassist, that perry spoke about. Jane's Addiction got together in perry farrell's garage on monday without eric avery, but with a new writing partner. we assumed the writing partner would also be a bassist to fill in where eric is leaving.
if yr not familiar with duff mckagan, he was the original bassist for guns n roses. i personally haven't kept up with him beyond that, but i've always thought he was a great bassist and his song writing is also decent for rock/punk genres. i personally like duff, he seems like a nice guy and he just may be a good fit with dave and stephen's metal/rock roots. so i'm not completely opposed to this.
here's what i am opposed to: calling it jane's addiction. i realize jane's addiction carries more weight than any band the 3 core members have ever been in and it will definitely bring in the cash. the truth is though, with duff on board, this is gonna be even more rock sounding than strays was and maybe that's the point. i realize bob ezrin was brought in to make jane's addiction rock. what seperated jane's addiction from guns n roses, motely crue, bon jovi, was the fact that there was a softer artistic, feminine touch. perry's and eric's influences merged with dave and stephen's influences made the band unique.
so go ahead abandon yr roots, abandon the very thing that made jane's addiction a once mighty band. rock yr arse off, but drop jane's addiction off and resist relying on nostalgia to sell tickets and downloads. do the right thing by all of yr loyal fans and stop raping the jane's addiction name.
but then again, does it matter? perry farrell's twitter:
"I have to remember: Those that matter don't mind, and those that mind don't matter." my suggestion, stop quoting drivel and write something brilliant, or none of it's gonna matter.
1/22/10 Jane's Addiction officially 3+ new writing partner
one day later and we have some more information on the future of jane's addiction as a band. according to perry farrell's twitter account, the band is writing. this includes dave navarro, stephen perkins, and a "new writing partner". no word yet who that is. i have asked, so hopefully we will find out soon. at least there is some realization that a writing partner is needed. i hope this all works out for all parties involved, but i'm not quite convinced there is a real future, just yet. i'm sceptical fan i know, but i've been running a website for nearly 10 years about a band that might as well be called "reunion addiction" or "jane's revolving bassists" by now.
the good part of all this being, at least we're hearing something. last time we got 6 months of silence, a break up, and two reasonably lame follow up bands.
perryfarrell: David, Stephen, and I with new writing partner, went into the garage. Felt like old days, except no cassette recorder. Crafting w/Protools.

1/21/10 Eric Avery quitting Jane's Addiction
i know it's all very shocking huh? it's all been speculated on and discussed, but we finally recieved the announcement via eric avery's twitter: "fyi, to answer the question directly, i am not writing with janes addiction." he couldn't say it any clearer than that. i don't think any respectable jane's addiction fan thinks for one second eric avery is gonna be a touring bassist only. eric rejoined the band for one reason only, to see if there was anything left to do with this band. it would appear there is nothing new on the front.
all i can really say, is start the 10 count, this band is out. who's gonna buy strays part two? not enough to justify doing it. eric avery's song writing skills were the last hope for jane's addiction.
i'm sure there are a few promoters that will pay to have chaney's addiction parade around on stage as if nostalgia is all you needed to put on a good show. but i doubt very seriously any major tour or record will come out of a band that's lost it's heart, it's credibility and it's last chance to redeem itself.
1/14/10 Jane's Addiction crafting their future?
it seems like facebook and twitter are our best sources for vague statements regarding what is going on in jane's addiction these days. a recent facebook comment from perry farrell was very clear, almost.
"
William Rennie Renshaw: It's time to get the band together... And release a new album... Brings back Good Memories.
Perry Farrell: We are William. Monday we get together to write new music and craft a future."
so, monday "we" hopefully that means jane's addiction are gonna "get together and write new music" and hopefully this means eric avery "and craft a future" now that seems to be directly pointed at the bassist situation. this is speculation only, but i'm guessing the members agreed not to announce any changes or plans until this very important meeting. so, that would explain the silence coming from all members. this also says to me, one of the members might leak whether eric avery is gonna continue and whether new material is a goal for 2010. and i just might change "loved" back to "love", depending on the outcome.
thanks to william for his request and thanks to perry for answering it.
1/9/10 Jane's Addiction needs Eric Avery

well, it's 2010, Eric Avery may or may not be leaving. no one is saying for sure. chris chaney is willing to cash the check if Eric isn't though. if there are any plans to write new material and these other three aren't begging eric avery to stay, they're crazy. if yr just gonna play big ticket shows like that new year's eve bullshit, then i hope eric quits.
this site and the people gathering here aren't the boss of jane's addiction, but i know one decision that would be permenant if we were: no revolving members. if, eric doesn't wanna play, the other three can't play. what if perk doesn't wanna play? you can just put jimmy chamberlin in there. what if dave doesn't wanna play? what if perry doesn't wanna play? what makes that ok? it's not like we're somehow music geniuses here, but surely jane's addiction isn't so much a business that you just swap members in and out. i know MCA wasn't replaced with RZA, when the Beastie Boys had to cancel. something tells me it didn't even cross their mind to try to play a show without him, let alone replace him.
one big rant i know. it means nothing, i know, but i gotta tell ya it's a damn shame. jane's addiction 2010 ain't never gonna compare to jane's addiction 1989. i don't particularly mind that, because it was so great then, it could never compare. the bad part is, 1989 jane's addiction, would tell 2010 jane's addiction to fuck off. don't be a big corporate rocker, at least try to stay true to jane's adddiction. if not, then just quit, find some other diamond to pawn.
i'm still here, this site is still here, and there are even a few people who are completely obsessed with this band, because of how deeply you affected them at one time. it's easy enough, here's a legendary band you were once in, remember how you got to be legendary? now don't fuck it up.
"you know that man you hate, you look more like him everyday" - perry farrell, 1988.
